Sun-Powered Solaris Car Wins Mazda’s Aurora Survivor 2050 Competition

While the car above may look like a vehicle straight out of one of Spielberg’s futuristic, sci-fi movies, this sleek piece of automotive engineering is a concept that could one day soon become a reality. Designed by All Jafari, the gorgeous car recently took home the grand prize in the Aurora Survivor 2050 Competition hosted by Mazda the Aurora Solar Vehicle Association. 10 solar powered three wheeled vehicles

Renewable energy is the buzzword of the day. Conservation of fossil fuel is of utmost importance in today’s world. We are constantly on the lookout for efficiently designed infrastructure, gadgets, and vehicles that allow us to make use of alternate energy sources that are sustainable; and what better source than solar energy can come to our aid? In a unique approach to save fuel, three wheeler vehicles (trikes) powered by solar energy are now being showcased.

Solar car racing may not be as popular as the Indy 500 but the participants and event goers have increased significantly since its initial debut in 1985. The Tour de Sol, which served as the first race, began in Switzerland and lasted 5 days. There were 72 cars that participated; unfortunately 20 of them didn’t make it to the finish line. By 1990 the event expanded and included separate events, one of which involved a course over Switzerland’s frozen lakes and mountain passes.

Now, Universities and even some high schools participate in the event from the U.S. to Europe to Australia. The universities use the opportunity to develop student’s engineering and technological skills. Universities from North America submit their designs in hopes of being admitted into the American Solar Challenge. The original race (called Sunrayce USA) was sponsored by General Motors in 1990 and started at Disney World and surprisingly enough, ended at the GM technical center in Michigan. The route changes each year; most recently the 1,100 mile course started in Tulsa OK and ended in Naperville, IL.

What's next - Self Powered Cars

As we know it

The rise in the number of cars on the roads has meant a rise in carbon emissions and a decline in the reserves of oil, the most commonly used form of energy that drives our cars. With increase in the cost of fossil fuels, auto makers have started pushing clean electric cars as a zero emission way to commute. However, considering that even electricity generation isn’t always a clean affair, the idea of vehicles that are driven by it doesn’t seem to be entirely clean either. Moreover, these electron fueled vehicles aren’t that much in demand because of their slow speeds, long recharging times and a reduced operating range.
