125 MW solar power plant to land in Arizona by end of 2013

Maricopa County, Arizona is set to play host to a 125 MW photovoltaic solar power plant, according to an announcement on Tuesday from Fluor Corporation. The company has won the separate contracts to build and maintain the facility, which upon completion will fleetingly join the ranks of the the world’s largest photovoltaic solar farms. The project, known as Arlington Valley Solar Energy II (AVSE II) will be built on 1.8 square miles (4.7 sq. km) near to the Arlington Valley Combined Cycle Facility, a 577 MW natural gas plant also designed and built by Fluor.

New Concentrated Solar Power Plant Design Reduces Land Use, Increases Efficiency

Probably the most efficient way of harnessing solar power is by using Concentrated Solar Power plants, or CSPs. Their design, however, is based on large mirrors (heliostats) placed in rows around a central tower, onto which they reflect the sun’s energy.

It’s abundantly clear that General Electric (GE) sees renewable energy and clean technology as a prime strategic business opportunity in the years ahead. From building the world’s largest wind turbines right on through to manufacturing solar-powered carports and electric vehicle charging stations, the multinational industrial engineering and financial services giant has its fingers in just about every renewable energy and clean tech pie you can think of.

Now, GE is expanding its thin-film solar panel manufacturing business, and in a big way. In April, GE announced its intention to build the US’ largest thin-film solar photovoltaic (PV) panel, this despite the oversupply and precipitous, 40% price drop that has occurred over the past two years.

The Greenough River Solar Farm Ten Times Larger Than Australia’s Largest

GE Energy Financial Services, in collaboration with US thin-film producer First Solar and state-owned firm Verve Energy announced their new plans for Australia’s “green energy” future.  As the companies claim, a new giant solar project is under way.

The solar farm that the companies want to build is ten times larger than any yet built in the country. It will provide electricity for a desalination plant in Western Australia, which has a mandate to use the energy obtained from renewable sources for all new desalination projects.

New Energy Technology’s Spray-On Solar Cells Applied on Flexible Plastic Material

The United States is one step closer to building a giant solar power project that will bring 400 new green jobs to Arizona. Dubbed Agua Caliente, the new 290-megawatt solar facility will be based on two new technologies that are expected to improve the predictability and reliability of the energy produced by solar power plants and supplied to the  grid.

These technologies (fault ride-through and dynamic voltage regulation) are new to the solar industry, so their implementation in the Agua Caliente project could make them industry standards throughout the U.S..

Sempra to build another solar power plant in Boulder City

After building the country’s largest photovoltaic power plant in Boulder City, California-based Sempra Generation is coming back to Southern Nevada with even bigger plans.

The company announced plans Thursday to build a 150-megawatt solar energy plant on 1,100 acres in the El Dorado Valley in Boulder City. The new installation, dubbed Copper Mountain Solar 2, will produce nearly triple the amount of electricity generated at the nearby photovoltaic plant Copper Mountain Solar 1, which was opened in 2010.

The addition will generate enough energy to power 45,000 homes, according to Sempra. The cost of the project was not disclosed. Construction is expected to begin in early 2012 and wrap up by 2015, employing about 175 construction workers at any time.

World’s Largest Solar PV Farm to be Built in U.S Maybe!

The race is on to choose the best location for the world’s largest solar power complex in the United States. Solar power experts have been working behind the scenes on a project that will see the most advanced and the largest solar power farm emerging to change the landscape somewhere in the southeastern United States.

By last count, there were seven finalists left, all hoping to have the solar farm in their midst. The International Energy Agency in this year’s global outlook says renewable energy sources will raise their profile in the coming months. All seven communities named as finalists for the solar farm are located in southeastern United States, the agency said.
