Horizon announces versatile Sunbox solar power charging system

People who are trekking in the wilderness, stranded at disaster sites or living in developing nations all have one thing in common – lack of access to an electrical infrastructure. Solar charging devices such as the Solio, iCharge and Joos Orange have been designed to meet the needs of some or all of these groups. One of the latest such systems, Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies’ Sunbox USB 3.0, is particularly versatile.

The Sunbox gathers solar energy through a 1.8-watt waterproof photovoltaic panel. Whenever the sun is shining, that panel automatically starts charging the power system module, via a 3-meter (9.8-foot) cable. That module incorporates a 6-volt 3,000 milliampere-hour battery, two USB ports, and an LCD screen that displays the battery’s level of charge. A full charge requires 6 to 10 hours of sunlight. Five ways to harvest clean energy from trains

Trains are the world’s most popular mode of transport, even popular than cars due to their speed, accessibility and reasonable fare. Ever since the invention of the first railway engine, trains have served as the medium between far-off distances, inspired many artists, poets and writers and offered time-to-time luxury services for those who cannot spend a fraction of their time devoid of them.

If the history of the environment is studied, then 2010 can be regarded as a very poor year for the industries following clean technology. It was really a disappointment when the major nations of the world met at the United Nation’s Global Warming Summit, which was held in Copenhagen in December, failed to a come to a common conclusion as to how the industries can cut down on carbon emissions. But now things have changed. Europe has been investing in clean energy. China has also emerged as one of the leading users of clean technology. Let us look at the top 10 green technology ideas that are set to change the world.

Copper nanowires could mean cheaper touch screens, solar cells and foldable electronics

In June of last year we reported on the success by researchers at Duke University in developing a technique capable of producing copper nanowires at a scale that could make them a potential replacement for rare and expensive indium tin oxide (ITO) in touch screens and solar panels. However, the water-based production process resulted in the copper nanowires clumping, which reduced their transparency and prevented the copper from oxidizing, thereby decreasing their conductivity. The researchers have now solved the clumping problem and say that copper nanowires could be appearing in cheaper touch screens, solar cells and flexible electronics in the next few years.

Lithium-ion batteries could store ten times as much energy per kg of batteries if they were constructed with silicon anodes (compared to traditional li-ion batteries). That is a gravimetric energy density of 1,000 watt-hours per kg. This could almost eliminate the range issue that electric vehicles have, but there is one problem:

Lithium-ion battery anodes absorb lithium ions, expanding during that process, and then contract as the lithium ions leave them. Silicon anodes crack and malfunction during this process because they cannot handle repeated expansion and contraction. This is due to the fact that silicon is brittle.
