Abengoa SA (Seville, Spain) announced that it has completed a 3 MW concentrating solar power (CSP) plant for the India Institute of Technology Bombay (ITT, Mumbai, India), as the nation’s first completed CSP plant.

Abengoa was responsible for design, engineering, supply and commissioning of the plant, which represents an investment of USD 4 million. The plant is located in Gwal Pahari, Haryana State, 35 kilometers from New Delhi.

Plant supported by MNRE R&D program

The plant utilizes parabolic trough technology, where long rows of curved mirrors concentrate light onto a fluid carried in a central receiver. The heat from the fluid is then used to produce steam, which drives a turbine to generate electricity.

The plant is supported by a program of India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MRNE) to boost research and development (R&D) towards making solar cost-competitive with conventional electricity by 2022.

India has set aggressive targets for the development of both PV and CSP in its Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission. While a number of CSP plants are being planned or are under construction, the ITT Bombay plant is the first to be completed.
