Sopogy signs MOU to develop 6 MW MicroCSP plant in Thailand

Sopogy Inc. (Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.) announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with MAI Development Company Ltd. (Thailand) to develop a 6 MW solar plant using its MicroCSP technology in Bau Yai, Thailand in 2012.

Sopogy has also granted MAI Development exclusive rights to distribute MicroCSP systems in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

“We are delighted to be partnering with MAI Development,” said Sopogy President and CEO Darren T. Kimura. “MAI’s commitment to solar thermal energy, strong track record in Thailand, and excellent governmental relations within Southeast Asia make the company an ideal partner for Sopogy.”

Electricity to be sold to the PEA

MAI will sell the electricity produced by the plant to the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) of Thailand. MAI Development notes that it holds 45 contracts to supply 360 MW of electricity produced from solar energy to the PEA.

Sopogy’s MicroCSP technology is based on concentrating solar power (CSP) technology, only operating on a smaller scale. Similar to CSP plants, in Sopogy’s design sunlight is concentrated to heat a fluid, the heat from which is used to drive a turbine to generate electricity.
