Green Megastructures Tower of Power by NL Architects

The mega structure

The Dutch firms NL Architects have designed Tower of Power as one of their entries in the Taiwan Tower Competition. NL Architects integrate sustainable technologies into the structure of the tower in its Tower of Power for the competition. The high-rise structure is a combination of a windmill and an observation tower. The design of Tower of Power aims at altering future wind energy generator structures and changes the concept of tourist towers. The tower will give an innovative, aesthetic appeal to new structures that generate renewable energy sources. With the Tower of Power in place, the tourists will have amazing views to marvel at in its distinctively shaped lobbies, office, parking lots, museums, conference centers, and the observatory tower.

10 Most innovative solar powered designs

Solar power is no longer just about slapping photovoltaic eyesores on existing rooftops to harness a bit of extra sun energy. Nowadays, people are finding unique ways to integrate solar energy into architectural, vehicular and even fashion designs from the beginning. Moreover, some innovators have even figured out ways to make structures entirely energy independent by combining various alternative energy sources. When solar was first introduced it was an auxiliary power source – now we have cars, boats, planes and even entire buildings that run on solar power. From the world’s first energy autonomous vehicle to solar balloons, arcs, lily pads and even bras here are some of the most clever contemporary solar designs.

Asia’s Largest Railway Station is Powered by 3,246 Solar Panels

We hear that China is not very eco-friendly. That may be true in many regards, but not so when it comes to the builders of Asia’s largest railway station – Beijing South. The station is large enought to hold a 747, has a roof area the size of 24 football pitches, can send 30,000 passengers on their way each hour and needs only 150 people to operate. Best of all…the power for the facility is generated by 3,246 solar panels that sit atop a glass roof. This gives new meaning to what’s above a glass ceiling, eh?

Your world of tomorrow Self sufficient mega cities

Today

The cities of the world are facing multiple challenges. While it is expected that nearly 60 percent of the world’s population will be urban dwellers in the next two decades, the disharmony among the spatial, social and environmental aspects of a city and its inhabitants is growing at a startling pace. The problems are more acute in the rapidly growing cities of the developing countries. According to an estimate, these cities are adding about five million residents every month and generating new forms of existential problems. These include the problem of space, health, jobs and a conflict with the nature amid threats of climate change and global warming. This can in no way qualify to ensure a sustainable future.

Our planet earth is also called the “Blue Planet” due to its inexhaustible water resources. It’s interesting to note that life exists on earth due to availability of water which generates oxygen as a by product, by chemical reactions, which is mandatory to sustain life.

Astronomers are relentlessly studying and exploring other planets with water sources for any traces of life. Mars has however come closer in this direction and might harbor life due to some traces of water found on it. The abundance of water on earth which accounts for about 70% of the total surface area and the rising sea levels have made environmentalist and architects to toy with the idea of designing underwater self sustaining structures if need be.

Australia’s high rise Skyscraper Greenest Office Tower

1 Bligh office tower, designed by ingenhoven architects + architectus, was inaugurated by Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard last week.
