Bankrupt Kodak to Produce Thin-Film Solar Cells In Near Future

Every end is a beginning. We all heard that before. I guess it’s not Kodak’s turn to test it for itself, as the company filed for bankruptcy just at the end of last week. The announcement is still fresh, but Kodak already has a back-up plan: going into the solar business by manufacturing flexible solar cells.

It may be more of a practical, economic measure that the company needs to take, since Kodak is in possession of a good deal of film production equipment that it needs to dispose of.

Pay-As-You-Go Solar Power Brings Clean Electricity To Off-The-Grid India

Solar power as service programs are nothing new in the US, at all. Though certainly not available in every state, plenty of companies are in the business of installing and owning solar panels on your roof and you purchasing just the electricity they produce. TreeHugger has covered this countless times.

But in rural India this is definitely a new idea, and Simpa Networks has a twist on the plan: Customers pay for their electricity up front, topping up their accounts using their mobile phones.

Need a new roof Solar power's included

OneRoof Solar is offering a new twist on the solar lease: when you replace your roof, you can get integrated solar panels with no incremental cost.

The company today announced it raised a $50 million series A round led by the solar arm of Korean conglomerate Hanwha Group. The company also said it has secured the funding to finance solar installations at residential customers.

Solar leases, which are available in about 20 states now, have quickly become a popular way to have solar photovoltaic panels installed. Instead of purchasing the panels, homeowners pay a monthly fee and the solar installer or bank owns the panels. With the monthly fee and lower electricity bills from the solar panels’ production, consumers pay a lower amount than they were paying before panels were installed.

Nicholas just wrote about China’s solar power dreams and it’s new feed-in tariff for solar yesterday. And I wrote in June about the country doubling its 2025 solar power goals (aiming for 10 gigawatts by that time). But we’ve got some more big solar news out of clean-energy-crazy China worth a share. China expects to double its solar power capacity by the end of the year and will reach 2 gigawatts of solar power capacity, according to a new report from a think tank linked to the government, the Energy Research Institute.
