Racing like the wind, powered by the sun

The University of Michigan’s Solar Car Team is hoping to break the U.S.’ 24-year dry spell at the 2011 World Solar Challenge this weekend. An American team hasn’t won the international solar car race since GM took home the trophy in 1987. But a lighter, faster car could give UM the edge it needs to cross the line first.

The World Solar Challenge is a 1,800-mile race across the Australian Outback in an ultralightweight, single-passenger vehicle powered solely by the sun. Teams race their solar vehicle between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., setting up camp in the desert wherever their vehicle stops. This year the UM solar car team will be competing with its 11th-generation solar vehicle, Quantum.

How to make a solar powered toy car

This article will teach you how to build your own solar-powered toy car. Knowing how to do this will not only benefit children, but also adults. When people are taught to use solar energy, they will become more aware of the fact that using natural sources is always better than thinking of sources that are fast depleting. Solar energy is available in abundance in all parts of the world. Children need to realize that electrical energy might not last really long. Drilling this thought into their minds at a really young age will augur well for the generations to come.

Solar car racing may not be as popular as the Indy 500 but the participants and event goers have increased significantly since its initial debut in 1985. The Tour de Sol, which served as the first race, began in Switzerland and lasted 5 days. There were 72 cars that participated; unfortunately 20 of them didn’t make it to the finish line. By 1990 the event expanded and included separate events, one of which involved a course over Switzerland’s frozen lakes and mountain passes.

Now, Universities and even some high schools participate in the event from the U.S. to Europe to Australia. The universities use the opportunity to develop student’s engineering and technological skills. Universities from North America submit their designs in hopes of being admitted into the American Solar Challenge. The original race (called Sunrayce USA) was sponsored by General Motors in 1990 and started at Disney World and surprisingly enough, ended at the GM technical center in Michigan. The route changes each year; most recently the 1,100 mile course started in Tulsa OK and ended in Naperville, IL.
