But, the saddest part being that the world is still ruled by gas-guzzling beasts that are threat to the environment. Efforts are being made to give the world environmentally-friendly vehicles that will be effective, energy efficient as well as clean. Public transportation systems, like buses, trains, airplanes, etc. are also getting an eco friendly streak as they run using solar energy and electricity. Such vehicles not only save precious resources but are also superior to gasoline driven vehicles as they are harmless for the surroundings.

The Japanese electronics giant Sony has announced the development of a new technology that produces energy from shredded paper.

At a fair about environmental products, opened in Tokyo, Sony invited children to make a little experiment. They introduced a paper into a mixture of enzymes and water. After a few minutes, the liquid has become a source of energy, being able to power a small fan.

New Organic Solar Cell Efficiency Record Obtained by Heliatek

A new efficiency record for organic photovoltaic cells has been reached by Heliatek, for the third time in a row. The German company created a cheap solar cell that can convert up to 9.8 percent of the incoming light into electricity.

Heliatek’s new solar cell is made from oligomers, and differs from polymer and dye-sensitized solar cells because the cells can be produced at low temperatures and uses the least amount of non-toxic materials.

Future Tech 8 Ways We Could Recycle Our Wasted Heat

Every electrical appliance — from a humble light bulb to a MacBook Pro — leaks precious heat. Electric companies love this fact. We, on the other hand, should be looking for solutions.

Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute teamed up with the University of Wollongong in Australia to design a new material that converts heat into electricity. They mixed zinc oxide nanoparticles (the material that makes sunscreen dry clear on your skin) with aluminum and heated it in a microwave for about three minutes. The zinc oxide conducts electricity and the aluminum makes it harder for the molecules to transfer heat. The difference in temperature between the two parts of the material sparks the electrons to start an electrical current.

Berlin based eco-conscious engineer, Benjamin Beck has made a noteworthy move in this direction. He has developed a green battery pack that is run by solar energy as well as kinetic energy. All you need to do is to place the charged out battery pack in sun for a certain period of time on sunny days and the battery will juice up within no time. But in cloudy days it draws the charge from your movements, thereby converting kinetic energy into electrical energy and gets charged up again. It has been named by the designer as Scaraby Energy Backpack. This functional green gadget is portable and convenient to use.

Self-Sufficient Thessaloniki Piers Pavilions Are Topped With Shiny Solar Orbs

Giannikis SHOP recently won an honorable mention for their shiny, pneumatic proposal for the Thessaloniki Water Transport Piers Pavilions. The open air pavilions would feature inflated pneumatic structures positioned on top of the pier to provide shade and seating for passengers waiting for their ferry. A WC and ticket office sit nearby, while the inflatable structure overhead works to harvest rainwater for use by the pavilion as well as solar energy to power the LED lights. Open-air design combined with prefabricated elements would help reduce construction and operational costs over time.
