A New Generation of Green Wheels

Prototype and production hybrids and electric cars debuted this week at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany. Car manufacturers showed off sportier designs—and some outlandish models.

The i8, shown here, is BMW’s first plug-in hybrid sports car. It can reach 62 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds, has a top speed of 155 mph, and can achieve 87 miles per gallon. It weighs 3,200 poundsBMW’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle will focus not just in saving the earth, but also on satisfying its driver’s need for speed. Like the Chevrolet Volt, the BMW i8 concept combines a traditional gasoline engine with an electric drivetrain. According to BMW, the i8 can be as fuel-efficient as the best hybrid cars, while still delivering sports car-like performance.

All-electric Tron Lightcycle hits the streets

Practicality tends to take a back seat when you combine sci-fi cult status with custom chopper building – and there’s no room for a pillion passenger on the Lightcycle. We first spied Parker Brothers Choppers Lightcycle project last year when it surfaced in gas-powered form, now the company has released video of a fully-electric version of the neon-packing two-wheeler in action. The electric motor may be quieter, but this one’s still guaranteed to turn heads.

The concept vehicle in the animation is a human-electric hybrid. You power the generator and the electric motor drives the vehicle. You can also drive it as an electric vehicle if you don’t want to or are unable to pedal your self. The vehicle can turn 360 degrees maintaining stability all the time.

Future electric vehicle to race on the expressway without a battery!

You would be aware of a range of options available for running electrically powered vehicles, also commonly known as EVs. But, here’s an innovative concept taken up by Masahiro Hanazawa of Toyota Central R&D Labs, and by Takashi Ohira of Toyohashi University of Technology – A class-apart, environmentally friendly proposal to power EVs to run unlimited distances! These researchers have taken inspiration from the concept of electric railway system that involves the running train’s cars being powered by an overhead wire. In a similar manner, they have developed a novel idea of a powering a running automobile while on the road, and also away from dangerous obstructions in its way.

It’s a Streetcar! It’s a Bus! It’s the Electric AutoTram!

The automotive industry needs to make a massive effort in order to maintain connectivity to the electric mobility phenomenon; electric cars are not only more expensive than their gasoline-burning counterparts (not taking externalities into account, such as the effect of burning fossil fuels on our health, environment, economy, and future livability of our planet), but they have a significantly shorter range and fuel is (for now) less readily available. Battery-powered vehicles can take hours to charge completely.

The EU has been offering incentives to auto makers for greener vehicles for some time, and buyers of electric and hybrid cars in many countries can expect some kind of tax credit. In Germany, the federal government is offering incentives to research institutions to develop practical electric vehicles. Their stated goal is to have a million EVs on the road in Germany by 2020 — a tiny fraction of the 42 million registered cars in the country today.

Electric cars are about to get a whole lot tougher — as Quimera is set to unveil what could be “most powerful electric car on earth”. Their new, super fast AEGT01 electric muscle car uses high-power Lithium Polymer EIG battery packs to achieve over 1,000 lb feet of torque and a blazing top speed of 180 mph. The supercar is set to launch Quimera to the forefront of the electric vehicle market when it is unveiled next month at Motorland in Alcaniz, Spain.

Two new electric smart vehicles will debut in showrooms next year. The third generation smart fortwo electric car will be available within twelve months in more than 30 markets. Driven by a 55 kW electric motor it will have a top speed of more than 120 km/h and a range of around 140 kilometers, with the ability to be fully recharged, in the right circumstances, in less than an hour.

Ford Focus Electric will offer solar home option
