Apple planning solar farm near data center, report says

Apple plans to build a solar farm next to its massive data center in Maiden, N.C., according to a Charlotte Observer report.

The company has won approval to reshape the slope of 171 acres of vacant land it owns adjacent to the data center in preparation for a data center, according to permits issued in Catawba County. However, the permit offered no details about the solar farm project itself–dubbed Project Dolphin Solar Farm– including its size, the newspaper noted.

Once an empire, Greece is now confronted with maybe the country’s most harsh economic crisis since its birth in ancient times. However, solar power seems to represent part of Greece’s salvation, just like Archimedes’ solar rays once saved them from the enemy.

Solar and wind industry leaders are hailing interstate transmission line regulations adopted Friday by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) as a move that could boost renewable developments across the rural parts of the U.S.

The move by FERC on Friday paves the way for new planning and cost requirements that are expected to ultimately lower the price of transmission, especially to metropolitan areas where most of the power in consumed. Organizations like the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) say the move will help update an aging grid and will allow proposed developments in remote regions to push forward.

Twice the height of the Empire State - EnviroMission plans massive solar tower for Arizona

An ambitious solar energy project on a massive scale is about to get underway in the Arizona desert. EnviroMission is undergoing land acquisition and site-specific engineering to build its first full-scale solar tower – and when we say full-scale, we mean it! The mammoth 800-plus meter (2625 ft) tall tower will instantly become one of the world’s tallest buildings. Its 200-megawatt power generation capacity will reliably feed the grid with enough power for 150,000 US homes, and once it’s built, it can be expected to more or less sit there producing clean, renewable power with virtually no maintenance until it’s more than 80 years old. In the video after the jump, EnviroMission CEO Roger Davey explains the solar tower technology, the Arizona project and why he couldn’t get it built at home in Australia.

Solar panels at AstraZeneca's Wilmington, DE Campus

Biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca (Wilmington, Del.) announced the installation of a 7,300-panel solar energy project that provides energy equivalent to about 10 percent of the campus’ office building electricity use.

The 1.7 megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) system, which is the largest non-utility solar project in Delaware, will produce green electricity that is the equivalent of removing the greenhouse gas emissions of more than 300 cars from the road per year.

“Producing green electricity is a significant step toward reducing the impact we have on the environment globally,” said Rich Fante, President, AstraZeneca U.S. & CEO, North America.

“AstraZeneca is committed to doing its part to create a cleaner, more energy-efficient Delaware.”

The PV plant is expected to produce 2.1 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which is enough to power about 100 homes. It also will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,200 metric tons per year.

“By choosing to use renewable and sustainable energy sources, AstraZeneca is investing in its energy future. It’s great they made that investment with Motech, putting a Delaware employer to work to help power the buildings where hundreds of Delawareans are working,” Governor Jack Markell said.

“We need to make things in America again, and emerging opportunities in green energy are critical to putting Americans back to work while protecting the environment,” U.S. Rep. John Carney of Delaware said.

“Delaware is positioned to be a national leader in these efforts because of partnership and coordination among private businesses and government. AstraZeneca has set a strong example of how to incorporate clean, environmentally-friendly policies into their business practices, and I’m confident they will continue to pursue additional green energy options for many years to come.”
