Facebook has finally launched its own version of the social network optimized for the iPad.

Until now, the version of Facebook that appeared on the iPad was the same as what showed up on the much smaller-sized screen of the iPhone.

This required iPad users to choose between the lesser of two evils: either use a portion of the iPad’s screen to surf Facebook, or hit a button in the top or bottom corner to expand the navigable area, thus reducing resolution.

Earlier tonight, Alexia found and posted some screenshots of something that sure looked a lot like the mythical “Project Spartan“. Shortly thereafter, Facebook took down the page in question. And for good reason. That was Project Spartan, we’ve now confirmed.

Facebook iPad App Preview Leaks Out

Facebook users were able to get a sneak peek of the social networking site’s long-rumored iPad app on Monday by using a jailbroken device and tweaking a file embedded in Facebook for iPhone.

The hack appears to have been first uncovered by Marvin Bernal on Twitter, and TechCrunch has since confirmed “with a source who had previously seen the Facebook iPad app” that this is indeed the iPad app that the company planned to launch with.
