Solar Frontier K.K. and Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K. on June 16th, 2011 jointly announced that 1 MW of Solar Frontier CIS thin-film solar panels will be installed at Showa Shell service stations in areas grid-supplied by electric service providers Tokyo Electric Power Company and Tohoku Electric Power Company.

With possible power shortages expected across these regions this summer, installations will commence June and cover 200 of the 400 service stations by September.

Reducing the electricity consumed from the grid at each site by 13% during the daytime

At 5 kW capacity, the solar energy systems will generate power for air-conditioning and lighting, and will reduce the electricity consumed from the grid at each site by 13% during the daytime. Showa Shell Sekiyu is also planning to further reduce the electricity consumption of its service stations countrywide by 15% by raising the temperature of air conditioning and using lighting efficiently.

Solar Frontier’s CIS modules, denoting key ingredients copper, indium, and selenium, offer leading economical and ecological advantages, cheaper and more efficient manufacturing, and are cadmium- and lead-free. The modules will be supplied from Solar Frontier’s Miyazaki Plant Two and Solar Frontier’s new gigawatt-scale Kunitomi Plant, the largest CIS manufacturing plant in the world.
