On June 13th, 2011, SunPower Corporation (San Jose, California, U.S.) and Colorado Springs Utilities (Colorado Springs, Colorado, U.S.) announced the completion of a 6MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States.

SunPower also announced that it will participate in the construction of a 1.8MW PV plant at a Bloomberg LP (New York, New York, U.S.) facility in Skillman, New Jersey, United States.

“The SunPower solar system at the USAFA has benefited the local economy, and is reducing the demand for fossil fuels and improving air quality in our community,” said SunPower CEO Jerry Forte.

“For the next 30 years or more, we are confident the system will dependably generate clean, renewable solar power to meet forecasted output.”

SunPower, USAFA to split RECs from PV plant The USAFA plant was built as a response to requirements that federal government facilities use increasing amounts of renewable energy, and USAFA’s Net Zero Initiative, which sets a goal for the academy to generate 100% of the electricity it uses from renewable energy sources on-base.

The project was funded in part through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. SunPower and USAFA will each own 50 percent of the renewable energy credits (RECs) from the system.

The plant uses SunPower PV modules and T0 Tracker systems.

Bloomberg to develop 6MW of PV in New Jersey

The PV plant at the Bloomberg LP facility will cover 3.2 hectares and is expected to be complete by the end of the year. The plant will supply 58% of the facility’s electricity demand.

Bloomberg states that it plans to develop nearly 6MW of solar power in New Jersey in the next three years.
