SkyBuilt Power Inc. (Arlington, Virginia, U.S.) announced that the U.S. Army is purchasing SkyBuilt portable power stations, which include solar photovoltaic (PV) generation, for use in remote locations in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Army Rapid Equipping Force, in partnership with the Defense Technical Information Center is purchasing SkyCases and SkyPAKs, a foldable crystalline silicon PV generation product.

“SkyBuilt’s wide range of rapidly deployable, renewable energy products – from 10W to megawatt and microgrid compatible systems, are designed to help the military cut fuel, logistics and save lives,” states SkyBuilt President and CEO David Muchow.

“SkyBuilt is pleased to support the REF and the DTIC in their continuous efforts to increase rapid response, cut the tether of fuel, and keep our troops safe.”

SkyBuilt products include battery storage

The company’s SkyCase power systems contain a lithium-ion battery system, four or more SkyPAK array kits, and an optional inverter system. The company’s SkyPAK systems are composed of one or more crystalline silicon arrays, which SkyBuilt estimates take one minute to set up.

SkyBuilt notes that its products can help to replace diesel generators in the field, eliminating fuel, logistics, maintenance and heat signature.

The company states that for every 24 fuel convoys in Iraq, one soldier is injured or killed, and that a 1% reduction in fuel can eliminate 6,000 convoys.
