FollowBAA is trying to upgrade its airport terminal Heathrow East by investing to an amount of £1 billion and naming it as Terminal 2. This new terminal would be designed by Foster + Partners and developed by Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O’Rourke’s joint partnership company HETCo. This terminal will house around twenty million passengers every year that chose Star Alliance airlines.
BAA is planning to reduce 40% carbon emissions compared to the other buildings by utilizing large north-facing windows in the roof to allow natural lights to light the building. They will install solar panels over the roof for self sufficiency. They will also develop a new energy center that will use renewable resources to heat and cool the building. Mike Brown who is Heathrow Airport’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “The new Terminal 2 is part of a major programme of work already underway. Passengers travelling through Heathrow will be using new and extensively refurbished facilities which provide us with an excellent platform from which we can provide a better service to our customers than ever before.”
The new terminal will have 185,000m² of floor space. This terminal will be completed in two phases. The first phase will be completed in 2013. The project under consideration is part of a £4.8 billion investment across the entire airport. Phase 2 that is scheduled to run parallel will merge the new terminal into the existing one. This phase will also incorporate the construction of a second satellite building. It will increase the capacity of Terminal 2 to 30 million passengers a year. After the completion of phase two, Terminal 1 will be shut down. This is likely to happen around 2019. But Terminal 1 will be open during the construction period.
Steven Morgan who is BAA capital director, said: “This is an exciting project, for the engineers and builders, and for our airlines and passengers. The challenges are not to be underestimated. We are constructing a significant new building in the middle of one of the world’s busiest airports and ensuring the operating airport is not affected is an absolute priority.”
