Toy maker Toys”R”Us Inc. (Wayne, New Jersey, U.S.) celebrated the completion of a 5.38 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, the largest rooftop PV plant in the United States, at its Flanders, New Jersey distribution center.

The PV plant is comprised of 37,000 Uni-Solar amorphous silicon flexible thin-film PV modules, and will meet an estimated 72% of the electricity needs of the facility.

“At Toys“R”Us, we continually look for ways to diversify our energy portfolio and incorporate sustainable initiatives throughout our operations,” said Toys”R”Us Chairman and CEO Jerry Storch.

“This solar rooftop project would not have been possible without New Jersey’s ongoing support and shared commitment to clean energy opportunities for businesses.”

Toys”R”Us to purchase electricity through 20-year PPA

Constellation Energy Inc. (Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.) built, owns and will maintain the PV plant, and will sell the electricity generated to Toys”R”Us through a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

Constellation Energy will retain the renewable energy credits (RECs) for the plant, which covers almost 70% of the distribution center’s 119,000 square meter roof. Toys”R”Us states that it will purchase RECs to offset the entire energy use of the building.

The celebration was attended by members of the U.S. Congress from New Jersey, delegates from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s Administration, local officials and employees of Constellation Energy and United Solar Ovonic Corporation (Auburn Hills, Michigan, U.S.).

United Solar Ovonic is a subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices Inc. (Rochester Hills, Michigan, U.S.).
