Intel, Kohl's, Walmart Top List of US Green Power Purchasers

Every year the EPA releases its list of top green power purchasers in the business world. We’ve dutifully reported on them for a while now on that annual schedule, but as it so happens these stats are updated on a quarterly basis. Relaying that info that frequently probably isn’t necessary, but the latest quarterly stats, just announced, do have some changes that are particularly notable.

Intel and credit card giant MasterCard are announcing a multi-year strategic partnership this evening, which aims to provide a more secure and simple way for consumers to pay for products online.

The two companies will be working to combine MasterCard’s expertise in payment processing and commerce with Intel’s strengths in chip-based security. So how are these two companies joining forces? Details are still being disclosed, but MasterCard and Intel are working on providing a safer and simpler checkout process for online merchants and consumers using Intel’s Ultrabook devices and future generations of Intel-based PCs.

Intel shows solar-powered CPU

The fact that portable electronics are getting to the point where battery life is simply not a concern is absolutely wonderful. We’re not quite there yet, but we’re so, so close. Intel is working on a new processor architecture that can run itself using nothing but light: no plugs, no batteries, just solar power.

Intel’s ultrabooks will soon be sporting a new chipset called Haswell. The Haswell CPU will have a 22 nanometer 3D architecture, the upshot of which is that it’ll consume twenty times less power than current chips. Yes, that’s twenty times less. That picture up there is showing a Haswell CPU humming along, powered exclusively by that itty bitty solar panel. Park the thing under the sun (or a lightbulb) and it’ll happily crunch numbers for you until the sun explodes.
